What is SMS to Microsoft Teams Forwarding?

SMS to Microsoft Teams forwarding automatically posts incoming text messages from your iPhone into a Teams channel or chat the moment they arrive. With Forward SMS, every text becomes a normal Teams message — searchable, mentionable, and routable through your existing Teams workflows. Enterprises use this to share OTP codes for shared accounts across departments, route customer SMS into a support channel, and pipe verification messages into the same place compliance, finance, and on-call teams already live.

How SMS to Microsoft Teams Forwarding Works

1

Create a Teams Workflow

In Teams, right-click your target channel → Workflows → pick the Post to a channel when a webhook request is received template. Copy the workflow URL.

2

Add Teams as a destination

In Forward SMS, create a new Microsoft Teams destination and paste the workflow URL. Tap Send test message to confirm the channel receives it.

3

Wire up the Shortcuts automation

Open iOS Shortcuts → Automation → Message trigger. Filter by keyword or sender if you only want specific texts. Save and you're done.

Works on every Microsoft Teams plan

Forward SMS uses Teams' built-in Workflows (Power Automate) to post messages — supported on every Teams plan including the free tier and Microsoft 365 Business. No Premium Power Automate license, no admin install, no IT ticket required to get started.

What teams forward to Microsoft Teams

SMS-to-Teams forwarding pays back hardest where the org already standardizes on Teams — IT, finance, compliance, ops, and shared-account access across departments.

OTP & 2FA codes for shared accounts

Route verification codes for shared corporate accounts (Azure, AWS, banking portals, vendor logins) into a private Teams channel where the responsible team can grab them — no phone passing, no screenshots in chat.

IT incident & on-call alerts

Pipe carrier SMS alerts (monitoring vendor fallbacks, status page providers) into an IT incident channel alongside the rest of your on-call tooling. Useful when SMS is the only channel a vendor reliably delivers on.

Payment, banking & compliance notifications

Forward bank SMS receipts and finance vendor alerts into a finance or compliance channel for ambient awareness, expense backup, and audit trail. Pair with Teams retention policies for record-keeping.

Customer SMS routing to support

Forward inbound customer text messages to a customer-support channel so the next available teammate can respond — same workspace, full context, no separate inbox to babysit.

Field-services dispatch updates

Route driver, technician, or delivery SMS confirmations into the operations Teams channel where dispatch already coordinates. Useful for logistics, home services, and field-sales orgs.

Cross-tenant verification

For consultants, MSPs, and agencies working in multiple client tenants, forward verification codes into a Teams Shared Channel both sides can see — without sharing phone access or routing through email.

Where Forward SMS is honestly the wrong choice

We'd rather you pick the right tool than be disappointed. Here's where Forward SMS is the wrong fit and what to use instead.

You're on Android.

Forward SMS is iPhone-only because the entire automation runs on iOS Shortcuts. If your source phone is Android, use AutoForward SMS or a similar Android-side app to post to your Teams workflow URL. We will not pretend to support Android.

You want Microsoft Teams to send SMS out (Teams → phone).

Forward SMS forwards messages from your iPhone into Teams. It does not dispatch SMS from Teams to phone numbers. For outbound SMS from Teams, look at Microsoft Teams Phone, Operator Connect, or a Power Automate connector to Twilio.

You need a second phone number that lives inside Teams.

Forward SMS forwards messages from your existing iPhone number — it does not issue a new number. If you need a fresh number that's reachable inside Teams, use Microsoft Teams Phone with a calling plan, or a service like Twilio.

You need messages to arrive when the iPhone is off.

Because forwarding starts on the iPhone itself, the device has to be powered on and connected to deliver to Teams. If it's off, no SMS gets posted. Teams delivery uses your configured Teams Workflow URL.
